On October 31, Kim Kardashian’s shapewear brand, Skims, released the “Ultimate Nipple Bra”. This push-up bra has, wait for it, built-in faux hard nipples. When Kim dropped the Ad for her new collection, people were shocked to say the least. In the commercial Kim is seated at a chunky desktop computer, a set reminiscent of vintage health class videos. Kim starts off by saying, “The Earth’s temperature is getting hotter and hotter, And I’m not a scientist, but I do believe everyone can use their skill set to do their part.”  Kim continues by telling us that, because the Earth’s temperatures are rising, she’s introducing a brand new bra with a built-in nipple. “So no matter how hot it is, you’ll always look cold.”

Some found Kim’s observational humor clever, but others were upset, especially environmental activists. They thought Kim’s joke was too far and upset by the bra’s materials (Skims uses virgin polyester, a non-biodegradable plastic). However, she is donating 10% of sales from the Ultimate Nipple Bra to 1% for the Planet, an organization that provides businesses with expertise in environmental giving and accountability to follow through with donating. But it could be argued Kim is greenwashing, the act of making false or misleading statements about the environmental benefits of a product or practice.

Even with the criticism, many praised Skims. Women who have had mastectomies, undergone treatment for breast cancer, and Trans women emphasize how valuable this bra is. This way these women can feel empowered and more confident in themselves.

Many people have laughed at this bra, saying it’s ridiculous. However, this bra couldn’t have come at a better time. The no bra look has made a comeback with the resurfacing Y2K Fashion and sheer fabrics taking over the Spring/Summer 2024 season runways. Brands like Mugler and Michael Kors showcased many sheer and transparent pieces during Fashion Week back in September. The normality of bralessness after the COVID-19 quarantine also has contributed to the popularity of the no-bra look. In addition, the body positivity movement is continuing to change and bodily rights in the wake of the overturn of Roe v. Wade, is on all our minds. Women are being told what they can and can’t do with their own bodies. Women are taking back their bodies and expressing themselves more through revealing clothing, and this bra encourages just that.  Women who want to participate in the no bra look, but don’t feel comfortable going braless, can participate in the trend while feeling confident and empowered.

Whether you hate the bra or not, you gotta give it to Kim for stirring up a discussion. Will this bra change the current fashion scene? Or will it be a purchase you regret in 6 months time, buried at the bottom of your closet.
