Concert Culture: How Harry Styles’ Love on Tour is Reshaping Concert Fashion

By Julia Lehrer

After leaving One Direction, Harry Styles grew into a star in his own right. Not only did his music style shift, but his personal style did as well. From standard boyband apparel to pushing fashion’s limits, his style today is closely tied to his Gucci collaboration. 70s inspired suits, bright colors, feather boas, extravagant patterns, and even dresses make frequent appearances on both Gucci runways and in his wardrobe. Styles’ bold fashion choices have become so synonymous with his persona that fans are taking inspiration from his wardrobe when picking their concert looks.

While concert looks based on the musician's personal style is not necessarily a new concept, the level to which Styles’ fans are taking it is extreme, and in turn, changing what concert attire means. In the past, concert style combined personal style, comfort, and hints of inspiration from the musician, however, at Style’s Love on Tour concert, inspiration from the musician is taking center stage.

Starting in August, each night of the Love on Tour tour became a fashion show. Concert goers spent weeks, and sometimes even years since the original tour dates were rescheduled due to COVID, planning their perfect outfit. Tiktok has been flooded with videos of attendees explaining the inspiration behind their outfit and showing their design process. Some fan’s created outfits based on looks that Styles has worn, while others were inspired by song titles or lyrics. While many of the looks end up being based on the same few iconic Harry Styles outfits, songs, or lyrics, every fan’s interpretation is different. Style’s entire personal brand is about loving yourself and being kind to those around you. This mantra is perfectly reflected in Love on Tour fashion, and fan’s are eagerly taking inspiration.
