The Next Met

After much delay and anticipation, the Met Gala finally returned with a bang! The theme for this past year was eclectic, to say the least. “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.” Running with this theme, the celebrity guests were supposed to be representing all things American in their looks, but not many of them did. Stars like Megan Thee Stallion attended the Met in a pink Coach dress, whereas Kim Kardashian shocked in a blacked-out number from French fashion house Balenciaga.
Not to mention, Balenciaga was definitely the winner of the 2021 Met, if there were to be one. Kim was not the only one who sported the designer’s looks. Rihanna (who notoriously shuts down the carpet every year due to her amazing outfits), Elliott Page, Justin Bieber, Isabella Huppert, Michaela Coal, and Tracee Ellis Ross all also arrived in looks brought to life by Balenciaga’s creative director Demna Gvasalia.
Taking into account the theme from this past year and that Balenciaga no doubt stole the show, what can one imagine the Met to be like next year? The theme has already been announced. A continuation of this previous theme, “In America: An Anthology of Fashion” will work with American film directors to create different rooms in the exhibit that all correspond to different periods of American cinematic fashion history. With that being said, it is a small wonder if American brands will “win” the next Met, or if Balenciaga will come back to reclaim its trophy.
