The fashion world has always embraced basics and neutrality as essential to everyday looks. Minimalism may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it has always been popular and it is rapidly gaining popularity through a different form today: Stockholm style.

Stockholm style has made its way around the world. The effortless and classy appearance of a beige top and baggy jeans has caught attention not only in the U.S. but across the globe. The specificity of minimalism, in the form of Stockholm style, became fashionable through TikTok and various other forms of social media. A Stockholm wardrobe is simply timeless, and it is here to stay. This style usually avoids complicated patterns or flashy colors and focuses on a simpler wardrobe., The Stockholm style can be applied to menswear and womenswear as it follows the same format.

Stockholm style can be characterized by specific pieces: Adidas sambas, linen pants, and cardigans, are all examples that have been used throughout social media as part of a Stockholm style outfit. The central concept is to look elegant by minimizing statement pieces. Of course, statement pieces can be used when deciding to curate an outfit based on the style, but the trick is that they should blend well. For example, baggy light wash jeans, a solid navy blue top, Ugg Tasmans, and a striped cardigan might go together nicely.

The style is not about wanting to avoid attention, but rather, blending in with simplicity and refinement. Though the fashion is minimalist, it doesn't have to lack color or accessories. Matilda Djerf, well-known pioneer of modern fashion and business owner, is the perfect example of someone who uses the Stockholm style to express her character. Her brand, Djerf Avenue, is full of essential pieces that reflect this method of dressing.

Though opinions of the minimalist characteristic of the style vary, one thing that is consistent with Swedes is that they genuinely care about long-lasting, sustainable items. Increasingly, more fashion paragons can appreciate this concept to create and wear durable brands rather than choosing fast fashion. I imagine that sustainability and simplicity in fashion will gain even more popularity as we transition into a more renewable world.
